Bedfordshire Day: Houghton Regis Memories. And Clangers

To celebrate Bedfordshire Day on Thursday 28th November the cafe at Houghton Hall park will have Bedfordshire Clangers,supplied by Gunns Bakery in Sandy which is one of the last places in the country to bake this local delicacy. What is a Bedfordshire Clanger I hear you ask?

Originally the Clanger was made by women for their menfolk labouring in the fields and was basically a boiled suet roll. The modern day clanger is baked with a suet crust to form a complete meal with a savoury filling at one end and a sweet filling at the other.

The meat clanger the cafe will be serving will be slow cooked beef in beer and herbs with rhubarb and custard at the sweet end, the vegetarian option will be vegetables in a cream sauce with spiced apple for sweet.

Don’t forget the Houghton Regis Heritage Society will be at the Visitors Centre from 2pm with three presentations on the History of Houghton Regis, these are Village Memories with unique pictures from the Pat Lovering/HRHS archive, Heritage in the Park and Christmas in the park. This is a free event and no need to book.
